It is true that people in HK are more accepting of big corporations, but I think one point is missing. Because of the previous absence of a coffee culture, the whole “coffee culture” thing isn’t actually a “culture” yet - it’s more like a fad; a trendy thing to do. Hence, there are very few cafes in HK that actually (know how to) do good coffee. I’m a strong supporter of local, independent businesses, but unfortunately a certain chain IS the place to get a kick. I have a favourite independent cafe, but it only exists in an area I don’t often venture into.
