The Q grader General Coffee Knowledge exam is the only completely written test in Q certification exam exercises.  It consists of 100 multiple choice questions about:

  • coffee cultivation,
  • harvesting,
  • processing,
  • cupping,
  • grading,
  • roasting, and
  • brewing.

Information from this test comes from basic resources available at the SCAA Resource Center.  These texts include:

  •  the Coffee Cupper’s Handbook,
  • Water Quality Handbook,
  • Coffee Brewing Handbook,
  • Coffee Cuppers’ Handbook,
  • Coffee Processing Technology by Michael Sivetz (reprint available in the SCAA store), and
  • SCAA Green Coffee Protocols and SCAA Cupping Protocols.

In addition, many answers are discussed in the short presentations given before this and other Q sections.  When your instructor speaks, be sure to pay attention!

Important: when taking the General Coffee Knowledge exam, leave no answers blank. The test is entirely multiple choice and wrong answers do not count against you. If unsure of an answer or when running out of time, complete every line before handing in your test form.
